The Tokyo Motor Show has seen the reveal of Nissan’s intention to launch a fully electric SUV – the IMx.
This concept vehicle is set to be a forerunner in how cars integrate with society in years to come with Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility.
Although it sits on the same electric vehicle platform as the new LEAF, the IMx boasts a re-engineered high-capacity battery, which claims to have a range of up to 373 miles. It has been stated that the model will generate 429bhp and 700Nm of torque due to the two electric motors being mounted on each of the axles to offer four-wheel drive capability.
There are also a number of new technological features which have been added to further enhance the vehicle, including a look at the future of Nissan’s ProPILOT driver assistance system, and a full-length OLED display to replace the dash, which allows drivers to control the instruments with simple eye movements and hand gestures and the ability to become some form of autonomous taxi. It can drop its occupants off at an airport then drive itself to a car park and connect to the grid in order to recharge before coming back to collect the driver after their journey!
Investing over £4.1bn in the development of electric cars, Nissan have really taken the leap into the EV market with the European EV boss Gareth Dunsmore hinting that there could also be a smaller supermini EV appearing at some point.
We can’t wait to see this model for ourselves, and even though the production version is likely to feature toned-down styling, the Nissan V-motion grille will still be front and centre on the IMx and the lack of the B-pillar allows for the rear-hinged back doors to be easily fitted.
