The recall affects 34 brands globally. Certain Volkswagen Group vehicles (including Škoda, CUPRA and SEAT) produced between 2004 and 2018 could be fitted with affected airbags from the now-defunct Japanese manufacturer Takata.
The recall programme is expected to continue for several years, with affected customers being contacted in batches as replacement parts become available.
Why are Takata airbags being recalled?
Takata airbags use a gas generator to inflate the airbag, but over time, and under certain conditions, the propellant inside can deteriorate. This could affect how the airbag performs if deployed, potentially causing serious injury or death.
The risk does not mean that every Takata airbag will fail, but it’s important that affected vehicles are identified and the necessary safety work is carried out.
Is my car affected?
If you own or drive a Škoda, CUPRA orand SEAT that was produced between 2004 and 2018, it’s worth checking whether it’ is included in the recall programme.
Vehicle manufacturers issue recall information directly to customers, with communications being sent in batches depending on the availability of replacement parts. This means you may not have been contacted yet even if your vehicle could eventually require attention. If your address or contact details have changed, you must inform the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority) so you can be contacted quickly and efficiently.
You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) on the respective manufacturer websites:
The websites also show you how to find your VIN number.
If you receive a recall communication, don’'t ignore it. Follow the instructions provided and arrange the required work as soon as possible.
What should I do if my vehicle is recalled?
A safety recall is not a routine service or an optional improvement. If your vehicle is identified as being affected, the recommended recall work should be completed promptly.
The manufacturer will provide information about what needs to be done and how to arrange it. Recall repairs are generally handled by the relevant manufacturer’s authorised repair network.
Keeping on top of recall information is one of the simplest ways to help make sure your vehicle remains as safe as it can be for you, your passengers and other road users.
